Frequently asked questions
I can't swim. Can I still sail?
Yes. You always wear a life jacket and an instructor sits next to you. The Hansa is a small sailboat designed not to capsize.
Do I need to book?
You can join on the day if there is space. If you want to be sure to sail, we recommend booking in advance. The fee is the same either way.
Do I have to wear a life jacket?
Yes. For your safety, you must wear a life jacket that fits your body, with the crotch strap fastened. This keeps the life jacket from slipping off and keeps your head above water if you fall in. We are sorry, but we cannot take anyone who cannot wear a life jacket.
What should I wear?
Wear clothes that can get wet and shoes that will not slip off. We do not recommend skirts. A hat and sunscreen in summer, and warm clothes in winter, are a good idea.
How old do children need to be?
Small children can sail if they can wear a life jacket. We have children's life jackets for ages around 2 and up. If the life jacket is too big, we cannot let the child sail for safety reasons, because it could slip off or fail to keep their head above water. Children under 4 sail for free with a parent or guardian.
Can I sail in a wheelchair?
The Hansa was developed so that people with disabilities can sail too. Please contact us by email in advance (sailabilitytokyo@gmail.com) to discuss how to board.
Can I bring my pet?
Yes. Dogs and even a sugar glider have sailed with us.
What happens if it rains?
Sessions may be cancelled due to the weather.
